Department of Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Department at the International Gulf Aden University was established in 2018, coinciding with the founding of the university. The department is the first in the governorate of Al-Dhale to award a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.

The department offers pharmaceutical courses based on the program’s needs, where students learn the fundamental and applied concepts of pharmacology and toxicology, and how drugs interact with the body’s organs and their side effects. In addition, students study the latest medications used to treat cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, cancer, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and other illnesses. The department also offers courses in basic sciences, including biochemistry, anatomy, and pharmacognosy for bachelor’s and diploma students.

The Pharmacy Department strives to support the vision and mission of the college and university, which, in turn, aligns with the vision of higher education by preparing and graduating highly skilled medical professionals to serve the country in various medical and research fields.

The Department of Pharmacy offers specialized study programs including:

– Bachelor of Pharmacy: A five-year program that includes theoretical and practical courses.

– Pharmacy Technician Diploma: A two-year program that teaches theoretical and practical subjects and focuses on practical training to qualify technicians to work in pharmacies.

  • The Department of Pharmacy contributes to serving the community and developing the health system.
  • It contributes to raising the health level of individuals in the country.
  • Preparing specialized human cadres to meet the needs of society.

  • Lecture halls equipped with modern educational tools.
  • An educational pharmacy that contains all types of medications.
  1. Medical Chemistry Laboratory
The Medical Chemistry Laboratory provides pharmacy students with the basic concepts of drugs, such as mechanisms of action, the relationship between chemical structure and effectiveness, acid-base properties/physical properties, absorption, distribution in the body, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity.

The laboratory also focuses on the basics of drug manufacturing, extraction, and identification of both synthetically manufactured drugs and natural products. The department offers five courses in this area, including Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry, Medical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

  2. Biochemistry Laboratory
In this laboratory, all biochemistry tests are performed, such as measuring protein levels, fats, blood sugar, and other chemical tests that students need to study and carry out. These tests are done using educational devices while adhering to laboratory safety guidelines for the safety of both instructors and students.

  3. Pharmaceutics Laboratory
This laboratory is dedicated to the analysis, estimation, and study of pharmaceutical drugs according to international pharmaceutical manufacturing standards. The following pharmaceutical forms are studied:

    • Solid pharmaceutical forms: such as tablets and capsules.
    • Liquid pharmaceutical forms: such as solutions, syrups, and drops.
    • Semi-solid pharmaceutical forms: such as ointments and creams.
    • Gaseous pharmaceutical forms: such as sprays.
  4. Pharmacognosy Laboratory
This laboratory specializes in teaching and training students and researchers on the use of modern devices for the extraction and preparation of medicinal drugs from local medicinal plants in Yemen. It involves extracting chemical compounds from these plants using modern equipment and methods.
